Ways to Get Ahead of Fall Hiring

Did you get caught in the summer hiring daze? We know hiring can slow down in the summer, with decision-makers on vacation and fewer immediate openings. Don’t wait until the fall hiring season starts to get back in the swing of things. Use these tips over the next couple of weeks to get ahead of fall hiring:

Review Training Plans

This is a good window to review the workforce development plans you currently have in place before you bring in your next hire. Consider surveying your most recent hires to see what did and didn’t work in your training plan and use that feedback to develop plans for the next generation of hires. This is also a great time to assess any knowledge and skill gaps in the workforce that you can address with additional training or potentially new hires. Training isn’t always the answer. Sometimes you really do need additional talent, so it's important to think about where it could come from.

Consider an Internship Program

College classes are starting up, so now is a smart time to consider an internship program to help build your future workforce.  Bringing on interns is a great way to introduce them to the company culture and fill in some of the skills gaps you might have identified. Interns bring a fresh perspective and knowledge of new and emerging trends that can help your workforce and company move forward. Even though this might seem like a temporary solution, it can turn into a long-term plan if you take care in building your intern program. If the logistics are holding you back, Beyond TalentEdge and can help you work through those challenges and get started.

Assess Workforce Gaps

It's easy to wait for an urgent staffing need to show up, but this quieter stretch gives you room to anticipate tomorrow's needs. Consider the gaps you may have identified in your training plan and skill sets, to see whether a new role would fill them. If there are teams currently stretched thin, what is missing, and how could you help them grow? Once you’ve identified those gaps, you don’t necessarily have to figure out the next steps alone.

Connect With Your Recruiter

Your recruiting partner doesn’t need to be someone you call only when you have an urgent opening. A recruiter can help you think through strategy even before a position is officially open. We can talk through hard-to-fill or specialized positions and match you with passive candidates that may be your best fit. Being proactive in your recruiting conversations can lead to a potentially less stressful hiring process when the pace picks up again.

Don’t let the slower hiring season lead to standing still. Use the time to develop current employees, plan for future talent, identify workforce needs, and get ahead of upcoming hiring. By the time hiring activity picks back up, you’ll be better positioned to act rather than scrambling to react.
